Superior Program Disability Insurance
Superior Program is a disability insurance product that offers comprehensive coverage in life and health insurance for all workers and professionals─even the self-employed.
Eligibility
You are eligible if you :
- are between the ages of 18 and 59 inclusively;
- work:
- at least 21 hours per week on a regular and continuous basis, or
- at least eight months per year totalling 1,050 hours per year;
- meet the Insurer’s underwriting criteria;
- are a Canadian citizen or have lived in Canada for at least six months and meet certain criteria.
Main coverages
Your contract must include at least one of the following coverages:
Disability Insurance - This coverage provides for:- Protection in the event of total disability in the event of illness and accident or in the event of accident only
- Payment of a monthly benefit ranging from $500 to $6,000
- Choice of the gross or net revenue method when determining your maximum available benefit
- A benefit period of 2 years, 5 years or up to age 65
- A waiting period of 0 days (accident only), 14 days, 30 days, 60 days, 90 days or 119 days. If you add the “+” option to the waiting period, you will receive benefits from the first day in the event of accident, hospitalization or day surgery.
- Risk classified based on your occupation
- Protection in the event of total disability in the event of illness and accident or in the event of accident only
- Payment of a monthly benefit ranging from $500 to $6,000
- A benefit period of 2 years
- A waiting period of 0 day (accident only), 30 days or 30 days +
- Risk classified based on your occupation
Additional coverages
You benefit from the following additional coverages or clauses, at no extra cost:- Waiver of Premiums: releases you from the obligation to pay insurance premiums while totally disabled
- Occupational Class Enhancement: based on certain criteria, it may be possible to benefit from an enhancement in occupational class, which lowers premiums
- Maintenance of Coverage when Remunerative Work Ceases: if you lose your job, take a parental leave or stop working temporarily, but have not retired, your disability insurance will remain in force for a maximum of 12 months
- Residual Disability Benefit: if you are returning to work after a disability and your functional ability has declined, resulting in a drop of over 20% of your annual income, you are eligible for a monthly benefit proportional to your loss of income
- Guaranteed renewable contract from year to year until your 65th birthday
- Disability Insurance in the event of Accident can be extended up to age 75, without evidence of insurability
- Automatic Increase in Benefits: if you wish, your Disability Insurance benefits will increase every year, without evidence of insurability, based on the increase in the Consumer Price Index
- Special Rehabilitation Benefit: the professional services necessary to learn new functions, in addition to benefit payment
- Death Benefit: an additional amount is paid to your estate when your death results from disability
- Organ Donation Benefit: a disability resulting from organ donation may lead to eligibility for benefits
- Assistance services concerning many legal and health topics
- Partial Disability Benefit: benefit payment when you are not totally disabled but are unable to perform 50% of the duties of your regular occupation
- Return of Disability Insurance Premiums: at ages 55, 60 or 65, you will be refunded 50% of all premiums paid under the Disability Insurance coverage, including the portion applicable to the Return of Premiums benefit, less any claims paid under the Disability Insurance coverage
- Extension of the Disability Definition: your “regular occupation” definition may be covered for 60 months or up to age 65
- Retroactive Benefit: when your disability lasts longer than six months, you will receive a lump-sum payment equal to the benefits you did not receive during your waiting period
- Indexation of Disability Benefits: if you are disabled for over one year, your benefits are indexed based on the Consumer Price Index

- Accidental Death, Dismember or Loss of Use
- Accidental Fracture and Extended Medical Care Further to an Accident
- Hospital Benefit
- Critical Illness Insurance
- Travel Insurance
- Extended Health Care and Dental Care Insurance (available only in Quebec)

- Premiums are based on the worker’s occupation
- Premiums by consecutive 5-year periods or up to age 65
